Racer Update: Welcome to Meltdown 10!
Dear Meltdown Drags Participant,
You are about to embark upon a great adventure, toward which we have striven these many months and years. The eyes of the world are upon you! The entire Hot Rodding World is watching Meltdown 10. Let’s show them how it was once done, make those that came before us proud, and REMEMBER… what it was like so many years ago!
The biggest celebration of ’60s and earlier vintage equipment is happening in just a few weeks. THANK YOU for being a part of it.
Remember the 3 rules of the Meltdown Drags: BE SAFE, HAVE FUN, and NO F*CKING WHINING!
Now that we have your attention, we wanted to take this opportunity to cover a few critical topics:
- Know Before You Go: Please read the attached guide completely. It will answer most questions you have and ensure you have the best experience possible.
- Parking: It is going to be tight—please help us out. We have more big campers and trailers than ever before, and cars are traveling from farther away in much higher numbers. Don’t be “that guy!”
- Night Racing: Friday night racing is open to anyone who wants to run. Saturday night racing is strictly for pre-selected groups and cars. To race at night, all vehicles must have a working taillight. All tow vehicles must also utilize a light at night.
- Golf Carts: Due to high spectator volume, golf carts must be limited to race support use only—no joyriding through the pits or property. No golf carts are allowed after dark without functional lights. All operators must hold a valid driver’s license… NO CHILDREN!
Safe travels to all, and let’s relive history together!
Respectfully,
The Meltdown 10 Crew

Pit Parking Rules
- Space is Limited: Parking will be tight. If you do not absolutely need your trailer or support truck in the pits once unloaded, you must park it in the track-owned field directly across the street. The Meltdown crew can shuttle you back if needed.
- Follow Directions: Parking will be strictly assigned by Meltdown Crew personnel wearing white crew shirts. Please cooperate; this is the largest vintage drag meet in the country, and we need everyone working together. Do not be “that guy. “
- Group Parking: If you want to park with your friends or club, you must arrive together.
- Footprint: Race cars must be parked directly behind your trailer. We do not have the space for teams to take up two side-by-side spots.
- Pavement & Regulars: Asphalt parking spaces are strictly reserved for vehicles with low ground clearance and dragsters. If you are a Byron Dragway regular, please note that you will not be able to use your usual/reserved pit parking areas for this event.
- Drive-Ins: There will be a dedicated, separate pit area for individuals who drive their vintage race vehicles into the track.
Classing & Staging Lanes
- Vehicle Classing: While your vehicle is being tech inspected, a Meltdown official will class your car. We class vehicles to maintain an accurate, historic representation of a mid-1960s drag meet.
- Staging Lanes (1 through 17): Multiple signs are posted indicating which lane(s) belong to each car class. Please follow these guidelines—nobody wants to see a 9-second Front Engine Dragster line up against a 15-second Mustang. Stick to your assigned class and lane.
- Line Up Correctly: You should line up with the car you intend to race directly in front of or behind you—NOT side-by-side.
- P .A. Announcements: Because some areas of the pits are far from the track speakers, please tune your pit radio to FM 87.9 to hear announcer calls.
- Congestion Management: We will call specific classes to the lanes to ease track congestion (e.g., we can’t have 200 gas-class cars show up simultaneously). We will rotate through lanes 1 to 17 all day, interspersed with scheduled club racing.
Period-Correct Vehicle Criteria
PLEASE PAY CLOSE ATTENTION TO THESE ITEMS. VIOLATIONS WILL RESULT IN YOU NOT RUNNING.
- Engines: If your motor is exposed, it must be period-correct (e.g., absolutely no LS engines in a front-engine rail). If your motor is modern/not period-correct, your hood must remain completely closed at all times.
- Hoods & Scoops: All scoops must be period-correct. No modern snorkel hoods or cowl induction hoods allowed. If you use hood pins or fasteners, ensure your hood is fully secured before every single run!
- Wheels & Tires: Only period-correct wheels are allowed. If you try to be “tricky” by painting modern center lines or running trailer tires, you will not race. All modern lettering must be completely removed from tire sidewalls. (Refer to the link in the original text for a safe removal method).
- Modern Speed Power Adders:
- Nitrous Oxide: No nitrous equipment is allowed to be present on any vehicle at this event.
- Turbochargers: Turbochargers are strictly prohibited.
Tracks Rules & Safety
Byron Dragway Tech & Safety Rules
Track personnel will perform tech inspections according to strict NHRA guidelines. Safety is Rule #1. The Meltdown organization is not responsible for, and does not make, the final track-safety call on who is permitted to race.
- No Anti-Freeze: Anti-freeze, Water Wetter, and all other cooling chemicals are strictly prohibited. Water only! This will be checked at tech. Water-only cooling ensures fast track cleanups in the event of a spill.

Pit & Spectator Safety
- Be Alert: Watch out for spectators. Some cannot hear cars coming over the noise of open headers. If your car gets loose or feels wrong on the track: BE SAFE, back out, investigate it, and fix it.
- Pit Conduct: Any unsafe behavior, reckless driving, or pit joyriding will lead to immediate ejection from the event.
- After Dark: No vehicles of any kind (including support bikes, pit vehicles, and golf carts) may move after dark without working headlights.
Food, Track Care & On-Site Amenities
- Track Cleanliness: Byron Dragway is a beautiful, clean facility, and the track crew works their tails off to keep it that way. Do your part: leave your pit space exactly as clean as you found it.
- Food & Beverage: The track concession stands serve some of the best food you will ever find at a race track at highly reasonable prices. Please support them!
- Alcohol: The track sells beer on-site. If you choose to bring your own beverages into the pits, cans only—absolutely no glass bottles allowed.
- Grilling: If grilling in the pits or campgrounds, do so in a clear safety zone and ensure your coals are completely extinguished when finished.
- Overnight Staying & Security: 24-hour security will be on-site overnight to provide protection and manage gate re-entry.
- Curfew: No revving of engines is allowed once the gates close for the night.
- Power & Showers: The track features one public shower facility for participant use. The track does not provide pit electrical hookups; you must bring your own generator if you require power.
Support the Event: Merchandise & Pit Sales
- Official Merch: Look for the massive Meltdown T-shirt tent located on the spectator side of the track. You’ll find official event shirts, hats, shop shirts, posters, banners, decals, and more. Get there early before your size sells out—your financial support at this booth is what makes the Meltdown possible!
- Pit Sales: Racers are permitted to sell their own team t-shirts, vintage components, and spare parts directly from their designated pit spaces.
